Six new Overwatch maps are in development, three could arrive this year

Overwatch director teases upcoming changes.

OverwatchOverwatch players could soon be battling it out in all new environments, with game director Jeff Kaplan hinting at what the future holds for Blizzard's ever-popular shooter.

Responding to a forum post on the frequency of new map released in the game (two new competitive maps since release almost one year ago), Kaplan revealed to fans that three new maps are currently "past the initial playtesting phase" and "looking likely for a release this year."

The Overwatch director also noted that non-standard maps are in development, too - but these will likely be for Arcade mode and won't be mainstays of the game's competitive environment.

"We also have 3 non-standard maps in development. We also have a few other experiments going on," Kaplan explained.

"Hopefully this will satisfy some of what you're looking for. We want to play on these maps as badly as you guys do. We'll work as fast as we can!"

Overwatch's most recent event, Uprising, is live now and gives players the chance to unlock new rewards and challenge themselves in a new "Horde" style PvE gamemode.
